State law requires that senior citizens reapply every year for the Senior Freeze Exemption, which are available to homeowners who are 65 years with annual household incomes of $65,000 or less. The Senior Freeze prevents increases in the taxable value of a home.
But many seniors don't re-apply so they lose this critical tax reduction.
In 2019, almost 26,500 seniors across Cook County failed to apply for the "Senior Freeze Tax Exemption resulting in an over payment of taxes worth $45 million, according to Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas.
Alderman Roberto Maldonado said, "In the 26th Ward, 141 senior citizens are missing their Senior Exemptions. These seniors could save thousands of dollars on their property tax bills just by applying now to re-instate the exemptions they received last year."
